Now that I have your attention, let me explain why we Americans may well be duty-bound to peacefully replace our government in the near future.
If Emperor Trump and the Republican Congress attempt a coup like the current attack NC’s Congress is making on those of us they are supposed to serve, the founding fathers say we are morally obligated to overthrow the government through peaceful means. The Declaration of Independence explicitly demands it (emphasis mine):
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. – That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, – That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
One badly needed change is that the Electoral College needs to go. It was included in the Constitution as a compromise because some of our founding fathers didn’t think that most property-owning white men (the only people who could vote) were competent to actually choose a president – they didn’t want the masses involved in the process at all. These days every adult citizen has the right to vote, and there is unprecedented access to information about the candidates, so the Electoral College is now a completely unnecessary and, as our latest election shows, seriously flawed anachronism that should have been dispensed with decades ago.
Some people argue against eliminating the Electoral College by saying that “the founding fathers knew what they were doing.” Those people have apparently not actually read the US Constitution, because Article V details how to amend it, which has already been done 27 times. The single greatest thing about our founding fathers is that they knew they didn’t know everything, but did their best and planned ahead so that future generations could fix any problems that arose.
